CBC training 2024 cohort. Beginning in April 2024, all teachers who are members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will be expected to participate in a one-year mandatory school-based training program to help them adjust to changes made to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
However, it is unclear whether the government or the instructors themselves would pay for this training.
Ruto has already implemented the recommendations of the Education Reforms Taskforce, which underlined the importance of retraining instructors in light of curriculum adjustments.

The committee proposed that the Ministry of Education adopt guidelines requiring all instructors who graduated before 2023 to engage in this one-year retooling and upgrading program to align with curricular changes.
Professor Raphael Munavu, the taskforce’s leader, called for the implementation of comprehensive Faculty Staff programs to prepare for competency-based teacher training.
Furthermore, in order to boost the number and quality of instructors entering the profession, the task force advised that applicants to pre-service teacher education programs acquire a minimum grade of C (Plain).

The Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education,
Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education,
Diploma in Special Needs Education,
and Diploma in Technical Teacher Education were among the pre-service courses that required a C (Plain).
Furthermore, the proposal called for the establishment of :
the Kenya Teacher Training College (KeTTC) to oversee all pre-service teacher training institutes (TTCs) as campuses,
with the purpose of maximizing resource allocation and distribution.
KeSTEM will also provide teachers with ongoing professional development (CPD) through the use of resources provided by Kenya Teacher Training Colleges (KeTTC).
It is critical to emphasize that university senates will continue to determine admission standards for bachelor’s degree programs in education.
Furthermore, after completing pre-service training, education graduates will be entitled to participate in a one-year internship program administered by the Teachers Service Commission.

Since its inception, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) has faced numerous challenges, including a teacher shortage in the Junior Secondary (JS) sector and issues with the pay scale for JS teachers.
Despite TSC’s efforts to hire more primary school teachers, reports indicate that a significant number of qualified primary school teachers have not sought for positions teaching junior high as of July 2023.
