The two giant teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) have agreed to increase tutor’s pay by between 7 per cent to 10 per cent.
The increase is part of the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and follows a proposal by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) proposal to increase all State servants’ salaries.
TSC announced on Monday that following successful talks with Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) will get an increase effective August.
The parties have also agreed and signed an addendum to the 2021/2025 CBA that seeks to cushion teachers against new statutory deductions and high cost of living.
Last week, the unions and the TSC leadership met at the Kenya School of Government, but KUPPET, KNUT, KUSNET, and TSC refused to sign the TSC’s offer of between 2.4 per cent and 9.5 per cent salary increase terming it as meagre.
They stated that the raise was lower than that recommended by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
The unions accused the teacher’s commission of deceit, noting that the offer was way below the seven to 10 per cent increase recommended by SRC for all civil servants, security forces and teachers.
Civil officials will receive slightly revised pay stubs after the government approved a 7-10% raise in net compensation.
with the government planning to backdate both the new monthly salary and the levies enacted in the Finance Act of 2023.
