On January 13, 2023, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) released a clarification concerning the compensation and benefits of ECDE teachers, responding to requests from county governments.

This action is part of the third pay review cycle, encompassing all public officers, including ECDE teachers, with results anticipated in June 2023.

Nairobi County, as the capital, offers the highest salaries among these counties, where certificate holders receive 33,020 Shillings, diploma holders get 36,220 Shillings, and degree holders earn 59,770 Shillings.

Salaries scale for ECDE teachers 

Meanwhile, Kisumu County provides competitive compensation, with certificate holders earning 32,800 Shillings and diploma holders receiving 36,000 Shillings.

It’s important to note that payment ranges for ECDE teachers in other Kenyan counties vary considerably, with figures spanning from 9,420 to 38,380 Shillings.

Importantly, County Governments are paying ECDE teachers above the stipulated Government Minimum wage based on the provided guidelines.

The SRC refutes reports claiming that ECDE educators’ salaries fall below the federally mandated minimum wage, asserting that these reports were based on the basic income of these teachers, rather than the gross salary.

Despite the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s call for a salary cut, the Ministry of Education advocates for improved salaries for Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers.

For instance, in Nakuru, certificate holders earn 19,859 Shillings, with payment details for diploma and degree holders remaining undisclosed.

Mombasa pays certificate holders 24,580 Shillings, while Machakos offers 18,540 Shillings to certificate holders.

In Kiambu (Ruiru & Limuru), teachers receive 28,000 Shillings for certificates, 30,980 Shillings for diplomas, and 47,900 Shillings for degrees.

Additionally, in Kericho County, the updated ECDE teachers’ salaries are as follows:
– Assistant ECDE Teacher 3 (Certificate): 29,561 Shillings
– ECDE Teacher 3 (Diploma): 40,000 Shillings
– ECDE Teacher (Degree): 49,000 Shillings

In Siaya County, the updated ECDE teachers’ salaries are:
– Certificate: 23,853 Shillings
– Diploma: 33,906 Shillings
– Degree: 43,470 Shillings
