As the P1 course is phased out, the government has developed the new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course for primary school teachers.
This course is offered only in teachers training colleges. Checkout the Approved colleges in kenya that offer the training.

Entry requirements for the new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam grade of C Plain or its equivalent as determined by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) is required for admission.
The duration of the new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course
According to the approved curriculum designs, the diploma training will last three years.
Teachers’ trainees will only be able to specialize in three subject areas after achieving a minimum KCSE grade of C (Plain) in the learning areas on which they desire to focus.

The specialization areas have been divided into four clusters, although teachers will only choose one subject from each category to specialize in.
Candidates must specialize in at least three learning areas, preferably from one of the four clusters, beginning in their first year.

- Foreign Languages (German, French, Arabic and Mandarin (Chinese).

Mandatory subjects in the new Diploma in Primary Education (DPTE) Course
- English
- Kiswahili,
- Physical and Health Education (PHE)
- Kenya sign language for hearing impaired.
The mandatory learning areas will expand the young teacher’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes in preparation for effective class delivery.
Those who would be permitted to teach in schools will have finished the required coursework hours and passed the assessment as mandated by the Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec.

They will also be expected to have completed the requisite practicum hours and passed the Knec-mandated evaluation.
Three months of micro-teaching as a course will be required before beginning teaching practice.
During this time, teacher candidates will produce learning and teaching materials as well as short lessons to trial on their peers for practice and feedback.
