TSC interdiction of teachers. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken measures against non-local teachers who sought transfers from North Eastern Kenya due to security concerns.
These teachers have been interdicted by the TSC for alleged desertion of duty,
Following a directive issued by the commission in September, which mandated their return to their respective workstations.
In response to this interdiction, the affected 8, who claim that the TSC is overstepping its authority,
Are all planning to stage a protest outside the commission’s headquarters in the coming week.
They are also petitioning parliament for intervention.
For example, Geoffrey Kipng’eno Lelon, a teacher from Kericho County based in Mandera County, and many others,
Were unable to return to their workstations due to security concerns.
As a result, they have faced interdiction by the Commission.
One of the affected teachers, Lelon, expressed the challenges they face, including
- the need to pay police reservists for security and
- the high costs of traveling to their workstations.
TSC interdiction of teachers
The letters sent to these teachers by the Nancy Macharia-led commission stated that they had violated the Teachers Service Commission Act by abandoning their duties.
The interdiction became effective from September 22, 2023, and applied to all teachers who were served notices by the TSC.
Some of the affected teachers have voiced concerns about the TSC’s actions, fearing potential consequences from their employers.
They noted a shift from transfer requests to interdiction without clear explanations, leaving them unsettled and confused.
TSC interdiction of teachers
These teachers had initially sought transfers from the region due to security concerns linked to the threat of Al-Shabaab and hostility from the local community.
They argue that the TSC has not adequately addressed their apprehensions.
The TSC outlined a 7-point appeal process for the interdicted teachers to follow before their cases are determined.
This process includes providing defense statements, having the opportunity to present their cases to the commission in person, and
specifying their nearest TSC sub-county for monthly reporting.
The interdicted teachers plan to hold a protest outside the TSC offices on Monday in response to these actions.
