Melkazadeck Inguza, Executive Secretary of Garissa KUPPET, has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to enhance the monthly pay for intern teachers to help them weather the current economic downturn.

- bad housing, and an expensive but inconsistent food supply.
Inguza requested the TSC to strengthen intern terms in order to recruit more students into the teaching profession.
Interns receive a salary determined by the Commission and depending on the yearly budget, according to the TSC internship agreement.
Secondary school intern teachers are paid Ksh 20,000 per month, with two deductions:
Ksh 200.00 for the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and
Ksh 750.00 for the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
The entire amount deducted is Ksh 950, resulting in a net compensation of Ksh 19,050.00 for the teacher.
