TSC P1 promotions 2023.Teachers Service Commission has engaged 30,000 teachers in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), but is experiencing teacher shortages in various areas of the country.
According to a TSC document, only 8,367 primary school teachers have migrated to teach in the newly formed Junior Secondary Schools.
Despite the fact that 68,671 primary school teachers are competent to teach in secondary schools.
A diploma in education is the minimum requirement for deployment to JSS.
According to data from Kenya’s National Bureau of Statistics, there are 2,047 teachers with master’s and doctorate degrees.
According to the study, TSC discovered that primary school instructors were unwilling to transition to junior secondary school since the new jobs provided little to no rewards.
The document is part of the teachers’ employer’s July 11 answers to the National Assembly Committee on Education.

“Our analysis revealed that a sizable number of teachers beyond the grade of C2, particularly deputies and primary school headteachers, did not apply for deployment to Junior Secondary School because they are already in higher job groups and there was no extra motivation,” the document said.
“If a teacher can earn the same amount of money but has a heavier workload and teaches at a higher level, they would rather not move,” Oyuu explained.
Any teacher who wants to transition to junior school has the opportunity to do so.
TSC says the portal for teachers desiring to transition from primary to secondary school is now open and that recruiting will continue on a rolling basis.
JSS employment 2023
So far, 21,365 teachers have been hired for one-year internships at junior schools, with another 9,000 hired on permanent and pensionable contracts.
This equates to around 30,365 instructors at State-owned junior secondary schools throughout the country.
With little more than 23,000 primary schools, each school has at least one tutor allocated to the junior school department.
However, during the recruitment process, 185 teaching vacancies in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa went unfilled. Even after re-advertising, the locations received no candidates.
TSC also concerns the insufficient money available for the recruitment of qualified teachers.
TSC estimates the required number of teachers in Junior Secondary School to be 70,430 at the time.
This means that the institutions are currently short 40,000 teachers.
