TSC pension status Sept. Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u promised teachers and legislators on Wednesday that the government is close to repaying arrears owed to around 11,000 retired teachers.
All these teachers have not been paid their pensions for the past 27 years.
The Treasury Cabinet Secretary stated that the government issued Ksh16 billion in May to settle unpaid teachers’ pensions backdated to 1997.
However, the funds were insufficient to cover all claims.
Since 1997, (TSC) has submitted 23,267 updated claims to the National Treasury, with 22,317 of them currently being processed.

The CS stated that the timetable for the Treasury to remit the pending balances will be determined by the availability of resources.
Claim payment is a controversial matter that is currently the subject of a legal procedure.
Furthermore, the fact that some of the retired instructors have already died complicates matters.
A subset of teachers are living in abysmal poverty as a result of the government’s refusal to pay their salary.
Teachers who retired after July 2003 are ineligible for these benefits.
This is because they received compensation increases as part of the 1997 salary adjustment.

The retirees were supposed to receive their compensation in five stages, with the final phase ending in 2001.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and the government negotiated a payment agreement during the first phase of the project.
Akelo Misori, Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education, has urged Parliament members to pressure the Treasury to ensure the payment of these payments.
