TSC publishes the list of 4,676 teachers who will retire today

TSC pension status. At least 4,600 teachers will leave the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) after attaining the required retirement age tomorrow.

Around 1,538 of these are school principals whose retirement will likely burden school administration.

Teachers in the north-eastern region, however, would be able to continue working after reaching retirement age, according to the Commission.

In May, the Commission welcomed teachers who had attained the statutory retirement age of 60 years.

TSC was compelled to hire instructors on contract after being overwhelmed by a large number of teachers leaving the payroll in Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties.

“This mass retirement will culminate in a dire situation of teacher shortage in the region,” claimed TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia in a news statement dated May 18, 2023.

As a mitigation, the Commission will hire retired teachers from the region on a contract basis for three years and then extend the duration of retiring teachers by three years once they reach the obligatory retirement age.

TSC offered over 14,000 positions for school administrators in order to cover the massive deficit in schools.

TSC advertised 14,738 teaching positions in December 2022 before withdrawing the posting.

It then invited applications in January of this year, March, and, finally, May.

Due to natural attrition, the government allocated TSC a total of  Sh1.1 billion in the current budget (2023-2024).

The purpose of the amount is to promote teachers under different job grades.

The Commission is now working on issuing promotion letters to senior deputies and successful candidates who attended interviews.

The TSC County and Sub County Directors have received a large number of promotion letters.

Teachers Must pick the letters beginning Monday next week.

The teachers’ employer urged instructors to apply for senior school administration posts in a third advertisement in May.
