Ms Nancy Macharia, CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), stated that another 1,594 retired teachers.
Therefore they will be replaced after serving their two-year extension.
According to Ms Macharia, the teacher shortage currently stands at 114,581 teachers.
Approximately 6,000 of those hired will work as interns.
Another 5,000 people will be hired on a long-term and pensionable basis.

She added that another Sh1.2 billion has been set aside in the Fiscal Year 2023/2024 to recruit 20,000 interns as a stopgap solution to alleviate the shortage.
Those set for retirement were given a two-year extension during the Covid-19 pandemic, she claimed.
“As a result, 1,594 heads of institutions who were meant to retire in 2020 and 2021 were allowed optional extensions to work under contract for a period of up to two years,” the report stated.
Despite the fact that the repercussions of the Covid-19 epidemic have been warned, Ms Macharia asked teachers to remain attentive.

By the end of last month, Macharia reported that 1,043 teachers and their loved ones had been hospitalised for significant Covid-19-related illnesses.
Macharia also announced that starting today training for JSS school teachers on Competency-Based Curriculum kickstarted.
